Autodesk Build alternatives for small contractors

For most small contractors, the practical Autodesk Build alternatives are Trimble ProjectSight or Fieldwire if you need RFIs, submittals, and drawings at a published per-user price; Procore if you are growing into larger commercial work and want unlimited users; and Contractor Foreman, JobTread, or Knowify if you need estimating, billing, and job costing more than model coordination. Autodesk now sells its construction products under the Autodesk Forma name, and the old Autodesk Build product page redirects to Forma Build. Who Autodesk Build fits

Autodesk sells its construction products in three groups: construction operations (including Forma Build), preconstruction (takeoff, estimating, BuildingConnected, bid tools), and model management (model coordination, design collaboration, Navisworks). The project management side covers RFIs, submittals, and daily reports for field and office teams, with document management running from design through operations. It targets general contractors, specialty contractors, owners, and designers across commercial, industrial, infrastructure, and institutional work.

The strength is the connection to design. A GC whose architects and engineers work in Revit can keep models, sheets, and clash checks in one family of tools, which cuts rework on coordination-heavy jobs like hospitals and labs. Autodesk also advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee and free 5-minute training videos.

Why contractors look for alternatives

• No list price. Autodesk's pricing page describes flexible user, project, and account-based pricing and sends buyers to a quote. You cannot compare costs on your own.
• Many products, many choices. Bundles span operations, preconstruction, and model management. A small firm may not know which pieces it actually needs.
• Design-centric value. If you never open a BIM model, a lot of the value goes unused.
• Billing lives elsewhere. Small contractors often want progress billing, invoicing, and job cost in the same system as the field.

1. Procore

2. Trimble ProjectSight

Best for small GCs and subs who want RFIs, submittals, specs, and punch lists at a low published price. Free for up to 3 projects with unlimited users; Go is $29 per user per month billed annually with unlimited projects and daily reports. Enterprise is custom priced and offers add-ons such as budget and change order management and Vista and Spectrum integrations.

3. Fieldwire

Best for field-first teams who mostly need drawings and tasks. Free for 5 users, 3 projects, and 100 sheets. Paid tiers on annual billing: Pro $39, Business $64 (adds a BIM viewer and custom forms), and Business Plus $89 per user per month (adds RFIs, submittals, change orders, and budget).

4. Bluebeam

Best for teams whose real work happens on PDFs: markups, measurements, and plan reviews. Per user billed annually: Basics $260, Core $330, Complete $440, and Max $590 (introductory). Core adds drawing compare and hosting Studio collaboration sessions. Pair it with a lighter project tool.

5. Contractor Foreman

Best for small GCs who want field and office together for a low price. Annual plans run from $49 a month for one user to $332 for unlimited users. Daily logs, punch lists, scheduling, change orders, purchase orders, and invoicing are on every plan. No model coordination.

6. JobTread

Best for residential and light commercial builders focused on estimates and job costing. $199 a month including one internal user, plus $20 per internal user from 2 to 10. Sub, vendor, and customer portal users are free. All features on one plan, no setup fee.

7. Knowify

Best for commercial subcontractors who bill on AIA forms and run QuickBooks. Core includes one user and AIA G702 and G703 pay applications and is listed at $99 or $149 a month depending on billing term. Advanced includes 10 users and adds job costing at $329 or $399 a month. Extra users are $29 each.

How to choose

Ask one question first: does anyone at your company open a 3D model each week? If yes, staying inside the Autodesk family or moving to Procore probably makes sense, and the decision is about price and support. If no, you are paying for coordination you do not use, and a document-and-task tool plus a billing tool may cover you for less.

Then price the team. Say a drywall and framing sub has a PM, an assistant PM, and 5 foremen who answer RFIs and log dailies. On ProjectSight Go, 7 users at $29 is $203 a month billed annually. On Fieldwire Business Plus, 7 at $89 is $623. Get Autodesk's quote for the same 7 people and the same projects, and compare the totals with any onboarding cost included.

1. List the documents you manage: drawings, specs, RFIs, submittals, change orders, pay apps.
2. Mark which ones your GCs require in their own system. You may only need a collaborator login there.
3. Trial the top two with one live project for at least two weeks.
4. Confirm exports for drawings, RFIs, and photos before signing.
